May Scripture Memory

Philippians 3:20–21

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Reflection Quote

“A derelict slave can become a herald for the kingdom. A shyster like Zacchaeus can be redeemed as a son of Abraham. A menacing Saul, ‘breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples’, can become a ‘chosen instrument to carry my name (Jesus) before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel’. A privileged slaveholder can learn that Christian charity extends to all persons, including slaves. God’s grace can transform them into something holy and profitable. From the mulch pile come beautiful flowers. We can see the grandest visions of God’s love and purposes being worked out in those who are downtrodden and oppressed.”

Psalm 46:1–11

Elder: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
Congregation: though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.Elder: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
Congregation: The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Elder: Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.
Congregation: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
All: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

 To God Be the Glory

  1. To God be the glory, great things he has done!
    So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
    who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
    and opened the life-gate that we may go in.

    Refrain:
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the earth hear his voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,
    and give him the glory, great things he has done!

  2. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood!
    To ev'ry believer the promise of God;
    the vilest offender who truly believes,
    that moment from Jesus forgiveness receives.

    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the earth hear his voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,
    and give him the glory, great things he has done!

  3. Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,
    and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
    but purer and higher and greater will be
    our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the earth hear his voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father thro' Jesus the Son,
    and give him the glory, great things he has done!

Affirmation of Faith

The Westminster Shorter Catechism

  1. Q. What is adoption?
    A. Adoption is an act of God’s free grace, whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges of the sons of God.
  2. Q. What is sanctification?
    A. Sanctification is the work of God's free grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto sin, and live unto righteousness.

Corporate Prayer of Confession

Gracious Father in heaven we praise you for your enabling work of sanctification. Forgive us for neglecting your grace and the work of the Holy Spirit that works in us to die unto sin and live unto righteousness.

We confess that we are often slow to recognize and repent of sin in our lives. We acknowledge our failure to love righteousness and hate that which is evil. God of all mercy, help us to live lives of ongoing repentance and faith.

We admit that we are often discouraged by the lack of sanctification in our lives. Help us to let go of our performance and perceptions and cling more and more to the perfect performance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name we confess, amen.

Assurance of Pardon

1 Corinthians 1:30–31

30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed

  1. Alas! and did my Savior bleed
    And did my Sovereign die?
    Would He devote that sacred head
    For such a worm as I?
    Was it for crimes that I had done
    He groaned upon the tree?
    Amazing pity, grace unknown,
    And love beyond degree!

  2. Well might the sun in darkness hide
    And shut His glories in,
    When Christ the mighty Maker died
    For man the creature’s sin.
    Thus might I hide my blushing face
    While His dear cross appears.
    Dissolve my heart in thankfulness
    And melt my eyes with tears.

  3. But drops of grief can ne’er repay
    The debt of love I owe;
    Here, Lord, I give myself away,
    ‘Tis all that I can do.
    Alas! and did my Savior bleed
    And did my Sovereign die?
    Amazing pity, grace unknown,
    And love beyond degree!

For the Beauty of the Earth

  1. For the beauty of the earth,
    For the glory of the skies,
    For the love which from our birth
    Over and around us lies:
    Lord of all, to Thee we raise
    This our hymn of grateful praise.

  2. For the wonder of each hour
    Of the day and of the night,
    Hill and vale and tree and flow'r,
    Sun and moon and stars of light:
    Lord of all, to Thee we raise
    This our hymn of grateful praise.

  3. For the joy of human love,
    Brother, sister, parent, child,
    Friends of earth and friends above;
    For all gentle thoughts and mild:
    Lord of all, to Thee we raise
    This our hymn of grateful praise.

  4. For Your church that evermore
    Lifteth holy hands above,
    Off'ring up on ev'ry shore
    Her pure sacrifice of love:
    Lord of all, to Thee we raise
    This our hymn of grateful praise.

  5. For Yourself, best Gift Divine!
    To our race so freely giv'n;
    For that great, great love of Thine,
    Peace on earth and joy in heav'n:
    Lord of all, to Thee we raise
    This our hymn of grateful praise.

Reading of Sermon Text

Philemon 1:7–25

17 So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me. 18 If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. 20 Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you.

23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24 and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. 25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Faith that is Effective

  1. Introduction

  2.  Level Ground

  3. Removing Obstacles

  4. Confidence in Christ’s Work

  5. Conclusion

We Are God’s People

  1. We are God's people, the chosen of the Lord,
    Born of His Spirit, established by His Word;
    Our cornerstone is Christ alone,
    And strong in Him we stand:
    O let us live transparently
    And walk heart to heart and hand in hand.

  2. We are God’s loved ones, the Bride of Christ our Lord,
    For we have known it, the love of God outpoured;
    Now let us learn how to return
    The gift of love once given:
    O let us share each joy and care,
    And live with a zeal that pleases Heaven.

  3. We are the Body of which the Lord is Head,
    Called to obey Him, now risen from the dead;
    He wills us be a family,
    Diverse yet truly one:
    O let us give our gifts to God,
    And so shall his work on earth be done.

  4. We are a temple, the Spirit’s dwelling place,
    Formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God’s grace;
    We die alone, for on its own
    Each ember loses fire:
    Yet joined in one the flame burns on
    To give warmth and light, and to inspire.

Benediction

Be Thou My Vision

  1. Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
    naught be all else to me, save that thou art
    thou my best thought, by day or by night,
    waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

  2. Be thou my battle shield, sword for my fight;
    be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
    thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tow'r;
    raise thou me heav'n-ward, O pow'r of my pow'r.
